Dreaming Peacefully

Well, I’ve decided to bite the bullet and actually pay for webhosting (through Dreamhost). Previously, I’d run this site out of a server in my basement. Unfortunately, that method has become impractical. The reason I originally decided to administer this website that way was twofold: hosting isn’t free, and I wanted more experience with network administration.

The transition has appeared to be pretty straightforward so far. It took less effort than I expected to transfer the files and database, and get everything back in working order. Hopefully, from you guy’s perspective, nothing at all should change. If anyone notices something broken, please, let me know!

Several events have caused me to change my stance on this. I have a job now, so the small monthly fee is an acceptable loss. However, a bigger reason is that now the constant tasks required to administer the network were becoming a drain on me when I’ve already been fairly overworked. Thanks to the job, I’m already administering a network, and implementing a lot of the things I was hoping to get around to for the past few months at home. Thus, there’s not much of an impetus for me to keep it around.

That’s not the only reason I decided to chance. Bellsouth’s absolutely horrible levels of service have convinced me that hosting out of my house is no longer a viable option. With downtimes of several minutes happening roughly every hour and the accompanying delay between DNS refreshes, this was completely intolerable. If I can make one recommendation to anyone out there, it’s to never even consider using Bellsouth’s substandard service. They have little care about reliability, and they do everything in their power to shirk responsibility or get out of doing work. Unfortunately, current circumstances dictate that I must use them for the time being; one can only hope the situation changes.
